Terms and conditions of use
These terms govern the use of Antarctic Life (Android and iOS apps, the Web App at app.antarcticlife.app and this website), provided by GROW IN SENSE SAS, Tax ID (CUIT) 30-71644990-0, with registered address at Los Arenales 1110, Lote 389, Escobar, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina (“Antarctic Life”, “we”). By creating an account or using the app you accept these terms and the Privacy policy.
01What Antarctic Life is
It is your digital expedition companion and personal logbook. With it you can:
- Record the wildlife, landscapes, glaciers, icebergs and moments of your journey, with photos, text and voice notes.
- Discover species, the Species of the day, the Explore atlas, “Around you” and alerts for areas proposed for protection.
- Relive your journey in My expedition and take home your PDF Logbook.
It works offline and syncs when there is a signal.
02Free and non-profit
Antarctic Life is a non-profit educational project: it is free, with no advertising, in-app purchases or subscriptions, and it does not sell personal data.
03What it needs to work
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Device | Android 7.0 or later; iPhone or iPad with iOS 16.4 or later; or the Web App in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari (16.4 or later). The Android and iOS apps will soon be available on Google Play and the App Store. |
| Account | A valid email address. You sign in with a code we email you, with a password or with Google. |
| Internet connection | Needed to create your account and sign in the first time, to sync, upload photos and voice notes, receive transcripts and download updates. Everything else works offline: recording, browsing species pages, the map and stories, and creating your Logbook. |
| Storage space | The app includes the species catalogue and the atlas. It also uses space for your photos and recordings until they are uploaded, and downloads the place-name origins once (about 4 MB). |
| Date and time | The device's date, time and time zone must be correct, because every record is saved with them. |
| Browser storage (Web App) | Site storage must be enabled (do not use private browsing), because that is where your data is kept for offline use. |
Device permissions
The app asks for each permission only when you use the feature that needs it. None is mandatory: if you decline, the rest of the app keeps working.
| Permission | What it is used for | If you decline |
|---|---|---|
| Location (only while you use the app) | Knowing which stage of the trip you are in, ranking the most likely species, saving where you recorded something, showing “Around you”, your position in Explore and the route in your Logbook. | You can pick the trip stage manually. Records are saved without location and no distances are shown. |
| Camera and photos | Taking or choosing photos for your records and your Logbook cover. | You record without photos. |
| Microphone | Recording your travel notes. | You cannot record notes; everything else works. |
| Notifications | Reminders, which you switch on, to record a travel note. | You get no reminders. |
The app does not use location or the microphone in the background.
04Your account
- You must provide accurate information and keep it up to date.
- You are responsible for protecting access to your email, password and devices.
- If you are under 16, you need permission from your parent or guardian.
05Responsible use in Antarctica
- Respect the Antarctic Treaty and its Protocol on Environmental Protection, the instructions of your operator, guides and crew, and wildlife-watching guidelines.
- Never approach, chase or disturb wildlife to record or photograph it. Keep the distances you are given.
- Do not touch or take anything from Historic Sites and Monuments.
- The app is not a navigation or safety tool: do not use it to make decisions that affect your safety or that of others.
06Educational content
Species pages, maps, stories and texts are educational and based on scientific and historical sources, which are cited in the app. Even so, they may contain errors or be out of date.
- The “chance” of seeing a species is based on historical records and does not guarantee its presence.
- D1MPA zones correspond to a proposed marine protected area, not an established one.
- Distances and positions are approximate; the map is not for navigation.
07Your content
- Your records, photos, travel notes and Logbook are yours and private.
- You grant us a limited, free, non-exclusive licence to store and process them (for example, to transcribe your notes) and to show them to you on your devices and in your Logbook. It ends when you delete them or your account.
- If you switch on use for conservation, you authorise us to use and share your wildlife records in anonymised form for conservation and research. You can switch it off at any time.
- Only upload content you hold the rights to. Respect other people's image and privacy, and do not upload illegal or offensive content.
08Intellectual property
We respect copyright: third-party content is used under open licences or with permission and is credited to its source. Licence details and how to tell us if something affects your rights are in the Legal notice.
09Service availability
We do our best to keep the service running without interruption, but we cannot guarantee it, especially in areas without connectivity. What you record offline stays on your device until it syncs: we recommend syncing when you have a connection and before uninstalling the app or signing out.
10Liability
To the extent permitted by law, Antarctic Life is not liable for damages arising from the use of the app, the educational information or the unavailability of the service. Nothing here limits your rights under consumer-protection law (Argentine Law 24,240).
11Closing and suspending accounts
You can delete your account at any time from the app (see how). We may suspend accounts that breach these terms.
12Changes
If we change these terms, we will publish the new version here and let you know in the app. If the change is significant, we will ask you to accept it again.
13Governing law and jurisdiction
The laws of the Argentine Republic apply. Any dispute shall be submitted to the competent ordinary courts of the district of Escobar, Province of Buenos Aires, without prejudice to the rights the law grants to consumers.
